Executive Team Roles
Vice-Chair
Do you like people and leading teams? We are looking for someone to co-run our Executive committee this year. You’ll learn on the job in 2025 (mentored by the current chair) in preparation to become the chair of the Pocket Change Executive committee in 2026.
Responsibilities include developing agendas and running monthly Executive committee meetings, liaising with the PCA executive and presenting at its AGM, providing oversight for Pocket Change initiatives, helping to set and follow yearly priorities and budgeting for Pocket Change, and building a collaborative and enjoyable team dynamic.
Time commitment: approx. 6 hours/month including attending one virtual meeting.
Treasurer
Do you love finance? Accounting? This role is for you! Responsibilities include helping our Executive team develop its yearly budget, tracking income and expenses against the budget, liaising with the PCA treasurer as needed, and making financial reports to the executive team at its monthly meetings. Time commitment: approx. 2-4 hours/month including attending one virtual meeting.
Communications
Is communications, marketing, and/or media relations your passion? Do you have experience in these areas or are you keen to learn? This role’s responsibilities include: managing the Pocket Change e-newsletter and website presence, promoting our annual Eco Fun Fair, handling media inquiries, and our Pocket Facebook account. You can also oversee volunteers assisting with some of these tasks. Time commitment: approx. 5-6 hours/month including attending one virtual meeting. Option: This role can also be shared among more than one person, so if you only wish to do some of these responsibilities (and not necessarily be on the Executive team), feel free to put yourself forward. We’re open to splitting this role among different people – see Communications Team below.
Other Roles:
We have some other fantastic roles available, which you can truly make your own! If you are interested in one of these areas, or would like to suggest another idea for a role, we want to hear from you!
Time commitment for these options: Could vary from “when needed/once or twice a year”, to a few hours a month, to more, depending on what you’d like to do. All of these roles could involve joining our Executive team (which would involve one meeting a month), if you’d like, or they could also be done independently, with the support of someone on our Exec team.
-
Advocacy: Stay on top of local environmental advocacy actions and help coordinate our Executive’s response.
-
Waste: Help your neighbours in the Pocket to reduce waste through initiatives like “freecycle” swap events, finding the right place to donate, enjoying take-out with reusable food containers, recycling and composting wisely and well, etc.? The sky’s the limit!
-
Youth: We’d love to have a youth representative (age 29 and under) or a youth team as part of Pocket Change. Have you got an idea for an environmental project you’d like to run in The Pocket? We’ll support you with it! Let us know.
-
Plant-Based Food: It’s delicious, right? And also healthy and great for our planet. Maybe you want to share recipes with your Pocket neighbours or run some virtual cooking classes? This is your chance to inspire people about the benefits and possibilities available for eating plant-based goodness more often.
-
Fundraising: Do you love raising money? Help us fundraise for our budget! We have some ideas; you likely do too… let’s come together!
-
Cycling: Are you a passionate cyclist? Maybe you’d like to organize group rides for people living in the area. Or run seminars about bicycle safety and other bike topics. Or set up bike repair or swap events in Phin Park. Or advocate for more bike parking and Bike Share stations in The Pocket and nearby. Or several of these, or ideas of your own.
-
EVs: Are you interested in EVs or do you have one? Join us and help us support our community and neighbours with the transition to EV ownership that’s well underway. This could include education initiatives and/or advocating for more local charging stations, as two examples.
-
Communications: We’re looking for people to help with our e-newsletter, drafting copy for our website and other uses, managing our email account, helping to promote our events, helping with our Facebook presence, handling media relations, and more. If you just want to contribute to any part of this, join our communications team!
-
Home Retrofits: We have a very active Retrofit group that's part of Pocket Change, and welcome additional members. If you’d like to help supporting neighbours in learning more about green home upgrades they can make, we’d love to have you on board. A variety of responsibilities are available on this team, depending on your skills and interests, and there is also opportunity to learn as you go.
-
Equity Team: We have a team working on an equity project to support 5 low-income homeowners in the Blake-Boultbee neighbourhood with some green and other home improvements. If you have an interest/experience in equity issues and initiatives, we’d love to have you. This project will take place over one year only.
-
Greening Team: You can help with organizing spring planting/garden cleanup days in Phin Park, taking care of the Tiny Forest, making neighbours aware of the importance of native plants and shrubs, and any other idea you have to help green our Pocket.
-
Work on our Eco Fun Fair: Our Eco Fun Fair is a large part of what we do. We always need volunteers to help out on the day of, and others to help organize it in advance. Our next Eco Fun Fair is taking place June 1, 2025.
